Pääkonttori - Headquarter
A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö initiated the design of a new headquarters amidst uncertain times in 1912. Architect Emil Fabritius, who had designed the Noormarkku power plant a couple of years earlier, drew up the plans. While working at the Jung & Fabritius office, he was solely responsible for the headquarters. The symmetrical two-story building, constructed of brick and concrete, boasts skillfully crafted terracotta facades. The plinth and stairs are made of reddish granite. Rising from the copper roof ridge is an elegant copper-clad clock tower. The interior of the building has been exceptionally well-preserved. A two-story high-quality wood-paneled hall is covered by a glass roof that lets in light through a lantern. When completed in 1915, the building featured heating and ventilation based on the calorifere method, as well as an elevator. The basement swimming pool is reportedly the first of its kind in Finland. The top floor houses a hotel-like guest apartment. The office building includes an open terrace facing the garden. On the riverside, the building is connected to a terrace supported by stone walls with stairs leading down to the shore.
The courtyard design for the headquarters began simultaneously with the construction work. Garden design was entrusted to Bengt Schalin, who developed several options between 1916 and 1922. The strict axial geometric garden created a connection to the official villas designed by the Thomén brothers. The ensemble included a central axis lawn parterre and a fountain with basins. Access to the office is through the east-facing lime tree avenue. The 1922 plan also included a building on the eastern edge of the park, but it was not realized.
The park has undergone several modifications over the years—1949 (Erik Sommerschield), 1957 (Leif Simberg), and 1958 (Paul Olsson’s office).
The headquarters suffered damage during the events of 1918, though not as severe as Havulinna. Today, the building still serves as the headquarters of A. Ahlström Osakeyhtiö.
Marked as KT/s in the land use plan, with sr designation for the office building.
The headquarters is located on the southern bank of the Noormarkku River in a commanding position at the end of the axial park layout. The original park layout has been simplified over the years.
Adjacent to the southeast of the office building, there is an open meadow with an old tennis court.
