Schools and Public Education

Public education was important to both Antti and Eva Ahlstrom, and they founded several elementary schools in Western Finland. After Antti Ahlstrom’s death, the company continued to support public education in several factory estates throughout Finland.

The Noormarkku works got its elementary school in 1875. Another company-operated elementary school was opened in the village of Finpyy in 1913. That school housed both a primary and a secondary school. The company also supported the construction of a new primary school hall in Finpyy, which was built next to Noormarkku’s municipal hall in 1918.
Once general education was made mandatory in 1921, the responsibility for primary education shifted to the municipalities. Because of this, the company donated the Finpyy school property – land, buildings, and chattels – to the municipality of Noormarkku. The factory school remained the property of the company due to its special location.
